8th GRADE SCIENCE NOTEBOOK

WELCOME TO SCIENCE!

The next 36 weeks will be exciting! You will be learning about Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Space Science, Sex Education and will participate in the Greater San Diego Science Fair. Plus we will spend some time on science fiction of yesterday (which in some cases is now science-fact!) and the science fiction of tomorrow! We will be working with chemicals, building roller coasters, burning things, building things... why we may even blow up a few things just for some Physics fun!! We will be busy, but I think you'll have fun and will enjoy learning!

You will be working with a Holt Physical Science Book at home. I will also have a class set if we need to use them. You will also be working, a lot, from my web page. This will serve as another reading source PLUS additional books I will have in class and available to you ON LINE.
You will also be doing a lot of work ON LINE with my web page.

I ALWAYS send weekly e-mails on Friday night/Saturday morning. Please be sure to check your e-mail DAILY to see if I have sent additional information. All e-mails will be sent prior to 8pm.

In addition, you will need a special Science Notebook Section in your 3-ring binders or a separate 1/2 inch notebook.
This science section will need to have the following dividers:
1) Syllabus/Class Guidelines & Rules 2) Agendas 3) Journals
4) Class notes 5) Video Notes 6) Reading outline
7) Reading questions 8) Labs 9) Handouts/worksheets 10) etc.
These dividers DO NOT need to be purchased but can easily be made with typing paper and masking tape! If you need help PLEASE see me!

Please keep all your materials for this class in this 3-ring Science notebook and bring it EVERYDAY to class. A very large percentage of your grade is based on these homework/class notebooks. The more complete and neat the notebook the better the grade.
(Note : if they are hard to read, they are hard to study!!)

I will collect ALL your work for each unit at one time. These dates are noted on your syllabus by "Notebook turn in dates". Please assemble your work to turn in, in the order of the cover sheet. Notebooks that have work out of order lose 50 points. I do not want to have to search for your completed assignments.

You will receive a 3-4 week syllabus that states on a daily basis, class work, labs, videos, homework, review and tests dates.
LATE WORK IS UNACCEPTABLE!!
This is an advanced class and as such, late work will receive maximum penalities. Please plan ahead and complete all work ON TIME!!! Work/assignments/tests will not be a surprise for you... please don't ask for extensions!

All reading assignments are to be outlined!! (This means you take some notes on what you're reading!) You will be graded on these reading notes. DO NOT COPY from the book, but put "in your own words" what the book is telling you. If you need help in outlining, PLEASE see me!!
